Two police reservists were expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for holding up a shop owner at gun-point, police said. The two men, aged 40 and 46, were working at a roadblock in Mamelodi on Monday morning, when they pulled over a vehicle with 23kg of copper wire inside, said Warrant Officer Ben Strydom.
The driver, 40, told the officers he planned to sell the wire at a shop in Eersterust. "They got into the car with the driver, in uniform, with their firearms, and went to the shop in Eersterust. The police got out and held the owner at gun-point and they demanded R6,000," said Strydom.
Apparently, the shop owner only gave them R3,000 and they left in the same car with the driver still at the wheel. On the way back to Mamelodi the driver was instructed to stop and let the men out where they walked back to the roadblock and continued duty. The shop owner phoned the police and a business robbery case was opened. Police in Mamelodi saw the reported vehicle and arrested the driver, who then took them to the roadblock and identified the two reservists. The two men were arrested Monday afternoon after the money was found in their possession.
The Sinoville police confiscated the money and the copper wire. The driver of the vehicle was expected to appear in court with the reservists on charges of business robbery on Wednesday.
