The ANC said on Tuesday it would like to see more local and black ownership in the media especially in the print sector. It has gone public with its media ownership transformation policy document which will be discussed at the ANC’s national conference later this year.
Spokesman Jackson Mthembu said there are already high levels of local and black owned agencies in the broadcast sector but the party would like to break the international stranglehold on local print media.
Meanwhile, Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele met the National Editors’ Forum on Tuesday and said the solution to tension between the police and journalists lies in better training. He said the police do not understand how journalists do their jobs and visa versa. The general said staff on both sides of the divide need to learn to work together. “This is one big area where we have to find a way of working together. When we have agreed [on that], how do we go to the ground level of police stations and junior journalists?” the general said.
