The police watchdog revealed on Monday that it is probing 29 complaints of torture and assault against Hawks officials in Belville South, Cape Town. Fourteen officers allegedly abducted and tortured New Cross Road resident Sidwell Mkwambi at the unit’s offices in the area last year. The Western Cape Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) head Thabo Leholo said investigators discovered several other torture complaints against the officers. “Since the ICD started this investigation other matters of a similar nature such as torture and assault were also reported. As a result, 29 cases of torture and assault are being investigated.”
Leholo said they are still waiting to hear whether their recommendation for criminal prosecution will be followed. “This investigation has since been completed and the dockets were sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions’ office on 3 March 2009 for a decision."
He added that they were still awaiting a decision on the matter.
