Four gunmen have helped an awaiting-trial prisoner escape in a daring getaway. Alleged fraudster Johannes Pieterse was taken to a Port Elizabeth hospital for a check-up when the well-planned escape happened. Police spokesman Captain Sandra van Rensberg says four gunmen overpowered two Correctional Services officers who were guarding Pieterse at the van. "They overpowered the officers and pushed them into the van and fled with Pieterse," she said.
The suspects fled in a grey VW Polo and a fifth man positioned at the gate ordered the security guard to raise the boom. Pieterse who was awaiting trial on several cases of fraud, has escaped from custody on a previous occasion.
