ONE hawker was shot dead and more than 10 injured in a fight with police at the Thohoyandou central business district yesterday. It is understood the hawkers were resisting eviction.
War broke out when the hawkers refused to be evicted, demanding that the municipality stop its action. The hawkers said their businesses were their only source of a livelihood. The police allegedly started firing at them and wounded several of them during the fracas. Thohoyandou police spokesperson Captain Mashudu Malelo yesterday declined to comment on the matter, saying they were still compiling a report.
Thulamela municipality spokesperson Nndwamato Tshiila said the hawkers were evicted because some of the businesses were operating without licences.
