Two police reservists have been arrested for stealing an admission of guilt register from the Strand police station in Cape Town, Western Cape police said today. "Surveillance footage revealed that the two reservist constables were the last people that used the register," Inspector Olebogeng Tawana said in a statement. "It is alleged that they issued fines to suspects and then kept the money to themselves," Tawana said
The policemen were arrested on Sunday after police investigating the incident found "evidence of the crime in their residences". "A police bullet-proof vest, forensic bags, alcohol kits and dockets were some of the items that were confiscated," Tawana said.
He said the two constables would appear in the Somerset West Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of theft and corruption. "An internal investigation into the allegations will also be conducted."
