Just a fine for blue light speedster?

Mpumalanga MEC for agriculture, rural development and land administration Meshack Malinga is deciding whether to lay an official complaint against his driver and guard, who was caught speeding in the Western Cape.

Constable Mgijimiseni Lekhuleni, who is attached to the police's VIP protection unit, was caught driving 162km/h in an 80km/h zone in Leeu Gamka on December 29. The car's blue lights were blazing, although the MEC was not with his family in the car. “At the moment the office of the MEC will not discipline the driver, because he's a member of the police department and they are the ones who should take steps against him. "However, the MEC was very concerned about the lives of his wife and his three young children who were in the car at that high speed. He is considering making an official complaint to the police about the incident,” said department spokesperson Victor Nkwalase.

According to Nkwalase, Lekhuleni was arrested by Prince Albert traffic officers and taken to the Leeu Gamka police station, where he was charged with speeding. “He was fined R4 000, which he managed to pay," he said.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi said steps will be taken against Lekhuleni only if Malinga reported the matter to the VIP unit, which is responsible for assigning drivers and guards to MECs. “After an internal investigation, every member of the police who is found guilty of a crime faces disciplinary action, even if he has already paid a fine,” said Hlathi.
